In 2015, Mark Rowntree started a watercolor series that celebrates the iconic Citgo sign of Kenmore Square. The watercolors are painted from a variety of vantage points around the square to explore different perspectives on the sign and architecture of Kenmore Square. The works range from representational to abstract and experimental.
As a Boston University student Mark remembers the sign welcoming him to the hustle bustle of the city, and his nighttime adventures in the restaurants and clubs of Kenmore Square. Part of every Boston University student's and Red Sox fan's collective subconscious, the Citgo sign seems to always be under threat of urban re-development.
